The purpose of this column is to highlight some players with upside and well-suited for tournaments. While the majority of the hitter picks will likely have power upside, that's not necessarily the case for all the listed options. Other contextual factors such as batting order, ballpark, opposing pitcher, price, speed, etc also come into play, and you'll see these items sprinkled into the write-ups below. Along with that, we'll be gauging the ownership levels, giving you some plausible pivots from the popular choices in a given game slate.
Top GPP Pitcher
Madison Bumgarner (LHP), San Francisco Giants
FanDuel | DraftKings | Opp | FIP | K% | GB% | Opp Run Total | Moneyline |
$11,300 | $12,500 | COL | 2.84 | 27.3 | 39.6 | 2.5 | -175 |
He will be extremely chalky tonight, but that changes nothing for me tonight. Bumgarner has been excellent over his first two starts, and tonight he faces a Rockies team that has been miserable at the plate to start the season. Toss in he is pitching at home and facing a team only projected to produce 2.5 runs tonight and Bumgarner should be one of your first locks in GPP lineups.
He will cost you plenty, but that will allow you to find some of those necessary pivots in GPP's with a few bats tonight. Not only is Bumgarner the best option on the main slate, but the secondary options are not very enticing, so securing him and staying with the field is a wise decision tonight.
Top GPP Hitters
Ryan Braun (OF), Milwaukee Brewers
FanDuel | DraftKings | Opp Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs RHP | ISO vs RHP | wRC+ vs RHP | Batting Order | Team Run Total |
$4,200 | $5,100 | Bronson Arroyo-RHP | 0.354 | 0.215 | 124 | 3 | 5.25 |
Jonathan Villar (2B), Milwaukee Brewers
FanDuel | DraftKings | Opp Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs RHP | ISO vs RHP | wRC+ vs RHP | Batting Order | Team Run Total |
$3,300 | $4,700 | Bronson Arroyo-RHP | 0.34 | 0.145 | 108 | 1 | 5.25 |
It may be a Brewers stack sort of night with the old man Arroyo on the mound tonight. Villar makes for a good number two hitter to lock in to in your DFS lineups tonight either way. His cost is significantly more on DraftKings, but I would still be willing to work him in if possible. Like his teammate Braun, Villar is the top option at second base tonight, and for good reason. He just hit another home run last night and although he has had plenty of 0-4 nights, he has also exploded with output in the other games good for an average of 10.42 FanDuel points. I can't see him going 0-4 tonight against Arroyo.
Mike Moustakas, (3B), Kansas City Royals
FanDuel | DraftKings | Opp Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs RHP | ISO vs RHP | wRC+ vs RHP | Batting Order | Team Run Total |
$2,900 | $3,400 | Jesse Hahn-RHP | 0.355 | 0.258 | 107 | 2 | 5 |
Rajai Davis (OF), Oakland Athletics
FanDuel | DraftKings | Opp Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs LHP | ISO vs LHP | wRC+ vs LHP | Batting Order | Team Run Total |
$2,500 | $3,900 | Jason Vargas-LHP | 0.299 | 0.139 | 79 | 1 | 3.75 |
Davis is unfortunately priced much higher on DraftKings than on FanDuel where I will be much more inclined to use him tonight. I do trust him more than some cheaper candidates on DraftKings such as Justin Bour ($3,300), Ryon Healy ($3,600), and Chase Headley ($3,300). The other consideration is Moustakas comes at a chepaer price tag on DraftKings to counteract additional cost.
Davis had been bumped down to the nine hole recently, but we project him to return to the top of the order tonight. His bat has been heating up over his past two starts and he should be in a good spot tonight against Jason Vargas. He is always a base stealing threat as well which adds some extra incentive to rostering him. I may not go in Rajai's direction on DraftKings tonight, but on FanDuel I will be much more inclined.
Good Luck!
