The purpose of this column is to highlight some players with upside and well-suited for tournaments. While the majority of the hitter picks will likely have power upside, that's not necessarily the case for all the listed options. Other contextual factors such as batting order, ballpark, opposing pitcher, price, speed, etc also come into play, and you'll see these items sprinkled into the write-ups below. Along with that, we'll be gauging the ownership levels, giving you some plausible pivots from the popular choices in a given game slate.
It is a Sunday, so be sure to monitor lineups and weather as always with early start.
Top GPP Pitcher
Jose Quintana (LHP), Chicago White Sox
FanDuel | DraftKings | Opp | FIP | K% | GB% | Opp Run Total | Moneyline |
$8,700 | $10,200 | SDP- J. Weaver | 3.46 | 20.6 | 38.6 | 3.75 | -190 |
Quintana got roughed up somewhat in Baltimore in his last start but prior to that hurled 3 great games. He had back to back 55 FanDuel point performances and has been hovering around a K per 9. His FIP is tied for second best with Pomeranz and only behind DeGrom. I have a feeling Quintana will be highly owned, but nowhere near DeGrom and Pomeranz's ownership.
His groundball rate is serviceable enough and his likelihood for a win is one of the best for today. Without many sneaky value play pitchers today, it is a pay up for pitching sort of slate. Quintana has quality start, middle range ownership, and a likely win written all over him today.
Top GPP Hitters
Mookie Betts (OF), Boston Red Sox
FanDuel | DraftKings | Opp Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs RHP | ISO vs RHP | wRC+ vs RHP | Batting Order | Team Run Total |
$4.700 | $5,400 | TB: M. Andriese-RHP | 0.396 | 0.208 | 147 | 1 | 5 |
It will be a little bit tougher to squeeze as many big boppers today compared to Friday and Saturday since we will be paying up for pitching. Betts for me edges out Bryce Harper today by a sliver. He has been red hot, and aside from a goose egg on Friday, he has been averaging 28.3 FanDuel points over his past 6 games, and keep in mind that 0 is included in there. He should be able to get on base in several ways today, and even if Betts can't hit another home run today, he will produce. His wOBA is second best of the top 10 projected hitters today as well. Betts is projected for 10.36 DraftKings points today.
George Springer (OF), Houston Astros
FanDuel | DraftKings | Opp Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs RHP | ISO vs RHP | wRC+ vs RHP | Batting Order | Team Run Total |
$3,600 | $4,400 | @NYY: L. Severino-RHP | 0.374 | 0.161 | 96 | 1 | 3.25 |
Springer has been on a power drought as of late, but what he continually does is get on base. He has averaged 9 FanDuel points over his last 5 games, and as I have said before I don't like to call home runs, but Springer feels beyond overdue. All it will take is a Severino mistake and Springer can take advantage. The .374 wOBA really jumps off the page for em today, and his consistency with tremendous upside is certainly here today. Springer is projected for 8.22 DraftKings points today.
Neil Walker (2B), New York Mets
FanDuel | DraftKings | Opp Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs RHP | ISO vs RHP | wRC+ vs RHP | Batting Order | Team Run Total |
$3,500 | $3,900 | @MIL: W. Peralta- RHP | 0.383 | 0.164 | 53 | 4 | 5 |
Walker has been under the radar this week due to hsi very slow start but he has been one of the Mets best hitters lately. With a streak of 21.7, 34.4, 9.2, 19.2 and 16 FanDuel points over his past 5 games has helped DFS owners get their value. Today he faces Peralta and happens to have a 0.383 wOBA against right-handed pitchers. His ownership may be on the rise, but still not as high as it should be today. Mets are projected to score 5 runs, and Walker should be someone who participates in that action today. The DFC optimizer has him projected for 8.02 DraftKings points today.
Corey Spangenberg (OF), San Diego Padres
FanDuel | DraftKings | Opp Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs LHP | ISO vs LHP | wRC+ vs LHP | Batting Order | Team Run Total |
$2,600 | $2,600 | CWS: J. Quintana- LHP | 0.45 | 0.25 | 35 | 2 | 3.75 |
Spangenberg has been solid since getting playing time in left-field and today we have him projected for 8.15 FanDuel points. Sundays can be tricky with players getting days off but Spangenberg should play today against the left-handed Quintana.
I know it is not usually a good idea to play batters against your starting pitcher, but today the value and reward is here, and I like Spangenberg to be a sneaky play with high upside as our projections indicate.
Good Luck everyone!
