The purpose of this column is to highlight some players with upside and well-suited for tournaments. While the majority of the hitter picks will likely have power upside, that's not necessarily the case for all the listed options. Other contextual factors such as batting order, ballpark, opposing pitcher, price, speed, etc also come into play, and you'll see these items sprinkled into the write-ups below. Along with that, we'll be gauging the ownership levels, giving you some plausible pivots from the popular choices in a given game slate.
Top GPP Pitcher
Luis Severino (RHP), New York Yankees
FanDuel | DraftKings | Opp | FIP | K% | GB% | Opp Run Total | Moneyline |
$9,800 | $12,300 | LAA | 3.86 | 25.1 | 51.6 | 3.75 | -240 |
Severino is the top priced pitcher on the slate tonight and projected to be the highest scoring. After he and Arrieta it gets very murky. His last start, a no decision where he produced 12.7 DraftKings points may have some owners skittish about using him again, but this Angels lineup without Mike Trout should be easy picking for Severino strikeouts.
The Yankees are also highly favored tonight, so jump on board with him, especially on DraftKings where you need 2 pitchers. Severino is projected for 32.67 FanDuel points and 17.76 DraftKings points. Severino is averaging a K an inning and pitched 6 innings or more over his last 5 starts.
Top GPP Hitters
Aaron Judge (OF), New York Yankees
FanDuel | DraftKings | Opp Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs RHP | ISO vs RHP | wRC+ vS RHP | Batting Order | Team Run Total |
$4,800 | $5,700 | LAA: J. Chavez-RHP | .450 | .356 | 200 | 3 | 5.25 |
Judge has been the highest priced player on both sites for a while now and for good reason. Even his rough games still have produced a few Fantasy points (He has 4 games with less than 3 points over his last 10 games. Besides those games he also has 6 homers and has been hitting a lofty .331 on the season. Jesse Chavez certainly shouldn't concern you about spending up for Judge tonight, and although he may not be low owned, he is a safe play with tremendous upside.
Having two players with wOBA's at or over .450 makes for near plug and plays tonight. Judge is safe any night at this point.
Kris Bryant (3B), Chicago Cubs
FanDuel | DraftKings | Opp Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs LHP | ISO vs LHP | wRC+ vs LHP | Batting Order | Team Run Total |
$3,800 | $4,900 | MIA: J. Locke-LHP | .472 | .314 | 238 | 3 | 5.25 |
Bryant's few days off may have helped him a smidge, but the young slugger hasn't been tearing the cover off of the ball as of late. His last two games though he produced 5 and 12 points respectively on DraftKings, and should be ready to do some damage against Locke and the Marlins tonight.
He has hit 3 homers over his past 10 games, and although his average on the year is only at .260, he has a whopping .472 wOBA against lefties on the season. His slump (at least for Bryant standards) should help his ownership tonight, and his wOBA/ISO alone should be incentive enough for rostering him and hoping for a breakout power game.
Seth Smith (OF), Baltimore Orioles
FanDuel | DraftKings | Opp Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs RHP | ISO vs RHP | wRC+ vs RHP | Batting Order | Team Run Total |
$3,100 | $4,100 | CLE: Clevinger-RHP | .329 | .172 | 115 | 1 | 4.5 |
Now that we are getting close to the 3k price point we are finding players with wOBA's under .400. Smith's .329 is ok, but not great. Platoon aside, he hasn't been terrible against right-handed pitching which is the only time he plays this season. You could do worse for a player at this price point and we have him projected for 10.41 FanDuel points tonight. Toss in some low ownership and Smith makes a solid GPP play tonight.
Javier Baez (2B/SS), Chicago Cubs
FanDuel | DraftKings | Opp Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs LHP | ISO vs LHP | wRC+ vs LHP | Batting Order | Team Run Total |
$2,400 | $3,300 | MIA: J. Locke-LHP | .390 | .211 | 146 | 7 | 5.25 |
Baez has cooled off considerably in June, but has produced 10,10, and 5 DraftKings points over his last 3 games. With Ian Happ and Addison Russell also getting play time Baez isn't guaranteed a start, but he should be in there tonight especially since he seems to be heating up again.
His .390 wOBA against lefties is significant, and should make him an intriguing value play for sure. His price may make him more popular (15-20% ownership range), but this is a solid enough matchup for Baez to make many of my lineups tonight.
Good Luck everyone!
