The purpose of this column is to highlight some players with upside and well-suited for tournaments. While the majority of the hitter picks will likely have power upside, that's not necessarily the case for all the listed options. Other contextual factors such as batting order, ballpark, opposing pitcher, price, speed, etc also come into play, and you'll see these items sprinkled into the write-ups below. Along with that, we'll be gauging the ownership levels, giving you some plausible pivots from the popular choices in a given game slate.
Top GPP Pitcher
Masahiro Tanaka (P), Yankees
FanDuel | DraftKings | Opp | FIP | K% | GB% | Opp Run Total | Moneyline |
$9,000 | $9,900 | Blue Jays | 4.63 | 21.2% | 49.7% | 3.75 | -132 |
Has Masahiro Tanaka been bad this year? Yes he has. but he's been better as of late, and gets a great match up tonight against the Blue Jays. Toronto struggles against the slider, and Tanaka throws his slider 33 percent of the time this year. When looking at the other pitchers on this slate, it just doesn't make any sense to fade him here. He's easily my top pitcher tonight, and the guy I want in my GPP's and cash games.
Top GPP Hitters
Charlie Blackmon (OF), Rockies
FanDuel | DraftKings | Opp Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs RHP | ISO vs RHP | wRC+ vs RHP | Batting Order | Team Run Total |
$4,400 | $5,500 | Bonilla-R | 0.398 | 0.267 | 149 | 1 | 6.75 |
Bonilla throws a lot of fastballs, and he throws them very hard. This will play right into Blackmon's strengths, as he crushes fastballs. I think the Colorado stack will be chalky tonight, but with some of their lingering injuries, I'm looking to just have some Charlie and Nolan shares, and hope the stack doesn't go bonkers. Charlie is in a great spot though, and is in play in all formats for me.
Rougned Odor (2B), Rangers
FanDuel | DraftKings | Opp Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs RHP | ISO vs RHP | wRC+ vs rHP | Batting Order | Team Run Total |
$3,100 | $4,200 | Porcello-R | 0.295 | 0.211 | 75 | 5 | 4.75 |
It's easy for me once I've looked at this slate to see that the Rangers are far and away my favorite stack of the night. Porcello has given up so much hard contact and barrels to opposing hitters that it's hard not to love them. Odor will be sitting right in the middle of that lineup, and should have plenty of opportunities to drive in some runs. I love Texas tonight, and love Odor who is severely underpriced in this match up.
Adrian Beltre (3B), Rangers
FanDuel | DraftKings | Opp Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs RHP | ISO vs RHP | wRC+ vs RHP | Batting Order | Team Run Total |
$4,000 | $3,800 | Porcello-R | 0.370 | 0.241 | 121 | 4 | 4.75 |
I can't see Beltre being too popular here. The 3B are pretty intriguing on this slate, and Arenado should eat up a lot of the ownership here. Beltre has fantastic BvP numbers off of Porcello, and has been great this year since coming back from injury. I like Beltre a lot tonight, and he's a must in my 5-man stacks on DraftKings.
Chris Young (OF), Red Sox
FanDuel | DraftKings | Opp Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs LHP | ISO vs LHP | wRC+ vs LHP | Batting Order | Team Run Total |
$2,400 | $3,500 | Perez-L | 0.288 | 0.040 | 83 | 6 | 6.25 |
I'm not a fan of stacking against Martin Perez, and I'm not doing so here by any means, but I will attack some one off's, and Chris Young is the guy I like here. Young is one of the only Red Sox players who have had success against Perez, and he comes at a ridiculously low price tag. Mookie will be over-owned here due to yesterday's game, and I'd like to pivot to a different OF on the same team, that's shown he has some success against this guy. Another guy that's in play everywhere for me, and should be quite popular, but I'm okay with that here.
