The RSM Classic Fantasy Preview

The Sea Island Golf Club is the host for the RSM Classic in the beautiful Peach State of Georgia. The Seaside Course is the usual host, but they've also expanded to the Plantation Course for Thurs-Fri to accomodate the full field. Each player will play one round at each course over the two days, with the cut makers playing the Seaside track on the weekend. The Seaside Course is a short par 70 measuring just over 7,000 yards, and is played on Bermuda grass greens. There is a history of blustery conditions at this event, so good wind players rank high on my list. The course is set up as a 'links style' but other than the wind and the greens, it doesn't bear much resemblance. I targeted players that have a good history on Bermuda greens and short courses. There is so serious trouble lurking on almost every hole off the tee, so accurate players will have an advantage over the bombers.

Key Stats to Sea Island Seaside Course

In terms of key stats, with a par 70 and such a short track, par 4 scoring (P4S) was an obvious stat to start with and was proven to be predictive to success here in the past. Two of the top three last year also finished inside the top 50 in P4S. Kevin Chappell cracked the picks this week, and also sports a very good P4S average at Sea Island of -0.14. Par 3 Scoring (P3S) excellence is also key this week, with the leaderboard being littered over the last few years with players who've feasted on par 3's. Ben Martin, Bill Haas and Matt Kuchar all made the picks segment and all have crushed par 3's in their careers at Sea Island. Finally, proximity to the hole (PROX) has proven to be crucial to success here over the years like P3S & P4S. Jim Furyk, Russell Henley and Zach Johnson are all in the top 20 in the field in career PROX at the Sea Island Seaside Course.
