2016 Quarterback Snap Counts Week 17
Oakland suffered another quarterback injury this week, as Matt McGloin went down, who was starting for Derek Carr. Connor Cook took over, and played the rest of the game. The Cowboys used all three of their quarterbacks, but it was Mark Sanchez playing the most in a game that did not matter to Dallas. Buffalo used EJ Manuel this week, who later gave way to Cardale Jones. This will be a position that's up in the air for 2016. Brock Osweiler took over for Houston after Tom Savage left the game. A handful of quarterbacks took off parts of the fourth quarter with their season's wrapped up.

2016 Quarterback Snap Counts Week 16
Week 16 had a rainy cloud over it for quarterback injuries. Both Derek Carr and Marcus Mariota suffered season ending injuries. Matt Cassel will fill in for Mariota in Week 17. Matt McGloin will will in for Carr moving forward and into the playoffs. Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers took some snaps off before the end of the game, and as we approach the playoffs we should see more of this continue. Ryan Fitzpatrick took over this week for the Jets, as that situation looks miserable for the future. Week 17 is up in the air for who is starting there.

2016 Quarterback Snap Counts Week 15
Brock Osweiler was the big storyline this week, getting benched for Tom Savage. In Week 16 the fingers point to Savage starting again. Matt Moore had a solid four touchdown game filling in for Ryan Tannehill, and the Miami Dolphins. Bryce Petty left this week with an injury, playing 76% of the snaps. Ryan Fitzpatrick went onto finish that game. Carson Wentz and Drew Brees played over 80 snaps this week, and only two players were above 75. Andrew Luck, Matt Ryan, and Tyrod Taylor were a few quarterbacks this week to take off a few snaps in blowout wins.

2016 Quarterback Snap Counts Week 14
We had a few blowout games this week, as Atlanta and Green Bay thrashed their opponents. This led to Aaron Rodgers and Matt Ryan playing less than 90% of the snaps. Ryan Tannehill was the only injury this week, and it might not be as serious as expected. He is likely going to miss the remainder of the season with an ACL/MCL injury, but would be able to return to the playoffs if they made it. Bryce Petty started over Ryan Fitzpatrick this week. This should be the case moving forward. We may even get another couple of backup quarterbacks in the mix moving forward.

2016 Quarterback Snap Counts Week 13
We saw a couple quarterbacks up top this week be the lowest performers, yet play over 80+ snaps. Blake Bortles and Carson Wentz, were those two. No overtime games this week, but we did have a couple of quarterbacks not finish or even start games. Cam Newton was benched for the beginning of the game, for not wearing a tie, which resulted in Derek Anderson coming in and throwing a pick. Colin Kaepernick was benched for poor play this week, after playing 78% of the snaps in Chicago. Joe Flacco was able to sit out part of the fourth, after a masterful performance against Miami.

2016 Quarterback Snap Counts Week 12
With an overtime game out in Denver, we saw Alex Smith and Trevor Siemain play the most snaps of Week 12. Siemain enjoyed the extra snaps more, outscoring Smith by quite a bit. Matt Barkley and Colin Kaepernick played the most behind them. Jared Goff, Eli Manning, and Ben Roethlisberger were some of the lower snap quarterbacks of this week. With no real injury news to break, everyone should be right back here again in Week 13. Andrew Luck would be the only real change, missing Week 12 with a concussion. This was the reason for Scott Tolzien snaps against Pittsburgh.

2016 Quarterback Snap Counts Week 11
We made it through Week 11 for the most part without a major injury. Cody Kessler did go down, playing just 29 snaps. Josh McCown played 37 snaps, and would be the targetable quarterback moving forward. Carson Wentz played the most snaps this week of any quarterback in a tough matchup against Seattle. Alex Smith and Joe Flacco played the least. Most opposing quarterbacks playing Dallas have been dealt with low snaps, due to their ability to control the game on the ground. In home matchups for Dallas, opposing teams are generally a stay away for upside. Keep that in mind.

2016 Quarterback Snap Counts Week 10
No overtime games this week jumping up those snap counts, but the Denver defense was able to create a lot of room for Trevor Siemian to do some damage. That didn't happen, but road quarterbacks against the Saints continue to be one of the safer bets. Cleveland split up their quarterbacks this week against Baltimore, as Cody Kessler played 56% of the snaps to Josh McCown's 56%. Carson Palmer and Carson Wentz both had 79 snaps this week, and Arizona's game plan seemed to be to get Palmer going. This hindered David Johnson's performance a bit in terms of his touches.

2016 Quarterback Snap Counts Week 9
Derek Carr led the week in snaps, yet did not accumulate a whole lot given how successful the running game was. Drew Brees was second, and Philip Rivers was third. Opposing teams facing the Cowboys have been hit with low snaps in the past, and Cody Kessler was a victim of that, playing just 44. Trevor Siemian and Ryan Fitzpatrick were two other low snap quarterbacks for Week 9. There were a couple of injuries that occurred last week, with Ryan Fitzpatrick limping off towards the end of the game and the same with Jameis Winston. They look to be minor, but be sure to keep an eye on it.

2016 Quarterback Snap Counts Week 8
As you would have probably guessed, Derek Carr led the week in snaps. He did play nearly a full overtime game, but also was on the field even more so than Jameis Winston. Kirk Cousins and Andy Dalton also had an overtime game, which led to more than usual snaps. The biggest surprise of the week was the Cowboys-Eagles game, which had Carson Wentz and Dak Pres-cott playing above 75 snaps. Usually these two teams grind things out and it's a lack of snaps for most offensive players. Alex Smith may or may not have had a concussion, but Nick Foles finished with 61% of the team snaps.

2016 Quarterback Snap Counts Week 7
In a game that went the full overtime, which means a draw in the NFL, Carson Palmer played 95 snaps, and scored just 14 fantasy points. The odd thing is that Seattle's Russell Wilson played just 63 snaps, nearly 30 less than Palmer. Aaron Rodgers dominated snaps this week, playing 87 snaps in a game that did not go to overtime. Green Bay did not have a legitimate running back, using a lot of short passing to help substitute the run. Look for this to be the same this weekend against Atlanta. It seemed like a bad quarterback week when you look at the snap counts, as Sam Bradford with Case Keenum both played above 75 snaps, yet failed to reach ten fantasy points. Brian Hoyer went down with an injury this weekend, and Matt Barkley picked up the remaining snaps. Jay Cutler was cleared for play this week, so you will likely see him back under center for the rest of the way. Cody Kessler was another quarterback to go down this week, which put Kevin Hogan in a spot to fill in. I am not sure who we will be seeing in Week 8, but they are really of no use anyway. After being announced starter, Geno Smith was diagnosed with a torn ACL, pushing Ryan Fitzpatrick back into the starting role. Fitzpatrick's snaps should be safe, unless he has another multi-interception game or two.

2016 Quarterback Snap Counts Week 6
We had a few quarterbacks this week play over 80 snaps, Joe Flacco, Brian Hoyer, and Cam Newton. Hoyer was the odd one in a slow paced game against Jacksonville. These are pretty rare numbers. We had a pretty serious injury this week to Ben Roethlisberger, who played 91% of the snaps. He will be missing a few weeks with a torn meniscus, which will force Landry Jones into a bigger role. If you are asking why Tyrod Taylor wasn't at 100%, it was due to a blowout factor. EJ Manuel played a couple drives in the fourth quarter. Colin Kaepernick started this week, and played 100% of the team snaps. We saw him rush for 13% of them. Taylor, Marcus Mariota, Russell Wilson, and Andrew Luck were a few others rushing for around 10% of their snaps. Case Keenum played just 58 snaps and was the second highest scoring quarterback on the weekend. This has a lot to do with the poor secondary of the Lions. That game was a back and forth affair, leading Matthew Stafford to be right there in fantasy points. Tom Brady, Cam Newton, Eli Manning, and Andy Dalton were a couple other guys up there in fantasy points this week.

2016 Quarterback Snap Counts Week 5
Aaron Rodgers played the most snaps of any quarterback this week, yet wasn't efficient with them. This had a lot to do with Eli Manning and the Giants playing at their high pace and going three and out. Marcus Mariota had his best week of the year, and played 74 snaps. Ben Roethlisburger, Derek Carr, and Tom Brady were some of the other notable names. Cleveland had an injury to Cody Kessler, which then forced Charlie Whitehurst into play. Cleveland is on their billionth quarterback, yet none are fantasy relevant. Phillip Rivers and Andrew Luck both played below 70 snaps this week, yet were top ten fantasy scorers. Eli Manning played just 56 snaps this week, which is tied to playing the Packers. Rodgers eats up a ton of clock and snaps with his drives. If he is efficient, things can be better, but like last night, he wasn't. This kept Manning off of the field. Jameis Winston, Joe Flacco, and Andrew Luck continue to log over 70 snaps per game on the season. Bad defenses will lock into their quarterbacks playing more snaps. Blake Bortles, Carr, Luck, Drew Brees, Matthew Stafford, and Winston have all had evidence of that.

2016 Quarterback Snap Counts Week 4
There were a handful of injuries under center this week, which led to some diminished snap counts. Cam Newton was popped on a two point conversion in the second half which led to Derek Anderson coming in and playing 41% of the snaps. Denver also had a situation with Trevor Siemian leaving the game in the first, which forced their rookie quarterback into play. If Siemian misses any time, we know Paxton Lynch will be the guy under center. Carson Palmer might be out Thursday night, which means some Drew Stanton. Joe Flacco, Andrew Luck, and Dak Prescott led this week in snaps. Flacco had 89, which was 11 more than Luck. The Colts, and anybody who plays them will continue to dominate quarterback snaps due to how the game flow. When you are efficient like Ben Roethlisberger, you can be one of the top scorers. He played just 55 snaps, but was the second best scorer, behind Matt Ryan. Russell Wilson and Derek Carr were a few other efficient quarterbacks who made the most of their time out there. We should continue to see this type of play out of those names, as we have the last few years. Guys like Luck and Blake Bortles will need there snaps to push over that average fantasy point mark.

2016 Quarterback Snap Counts Week 3
Injuries continued to hit the NFL hard this week, and Russell Wilson was one of the ones to leave the game. We saw him play 67% of the snaps before Trevone Boykin came in to take over, playing the rest. With Jacoby Brissett playing 100% of the snaps, safe to say he will take over until Tom Brady returns in week 5. Game flow dictated a lot of come from behind type runs from quarterbacks this week. Jameis Winston played 90 snaps, but did get an extra drive in due to the fact there was a defensive touchdown for Los Angeles. Carson Palmer was next, but the fantasy points were the complete opposite. He played 82 snaps, and had multiple turnovers. The Matthew Stafford and Aaron Rodgers were back and forth in points this week, and despite playing just 54 snaps, Rodgers was the third highest scoring quarterback this weekend. Brian Hoyer managed a decent week filling in for Jay Cutler, and we should likely see similar outcomes from him as long as he is in there. As far as consistent high snaps go, keep looking at Andrew Luck with that bad defense in Indy. Snaps for him mean plenty of attempts.

2016 Quarterback Snap Counts Week 2
Cam Newton led the quarterbacks this week in snap counts, and also scored more fantasy points than any other quarterback. Is there a correlation? Certainly there were a few exceptions like Carson Palmer. He played just 54 snaps, yet scored the fifth most fantasy points in Week 2. This was due to the blowout that took place, and we saw Drew Stanton take over in the fourth quarter. Otherwise we saw the top three scorers from Week 2, produce over 60 snaps. We had our share of injuries in Week 2, which resulted in some backup play. Jimmy Garoppolo played 53% of the snaps this week, before injuring his shoulder. He missed half the game and is week-to-week. Jay Cutler was another one who went down in the mid third quarter. He played 38 snaps before Brian Hoyer took over to finish out the game. With high paced teams like the Lions and Panthers, you can expect Newton and Matthew Stafford to keep topping the charts in terms of snaps. Eli Manning isn't far behind. Pace of play can dictate snaps, just like teams that move the ball in big portions like San Diego. We saw Phillip Rivers break out big plays, which was why his snaps were average.

2016 Quarterback Snap Counts Week 1
Quarterback snap counts are more just an indicator of who started, and benefitted from game flow, and high scoring games. Tyrod Taylor played just 48 snaps against Baltimore, and we saw the Buffalo production result in a bad performance. Generally we are looking for quarterbacks to sit in that 65+ range, as many did for week 1. Unless you are efficient like Aaron Rodgers, you can handle low snap counts. Quarterbacks like Blake Bortles need that high snap count, which we saw with him (74). Week 1 doesn't need to make your decisions for moving forward just yet, but be aware.

The first thing you notice when looking at quarterback snaps is the amazing percentage of time that they're on the field. Amazingly, Blake Bortles and Jameis Winston played 100 percent of their teams snaps in 2016. This means a few things. First, that they played a lot of close games and second, they were durable. 19 quarterbacks played above 90 percent of their teams snaps in 2015. So while the common perception is that quarterback play is at an all-time low, it's certainly a positive sign that two thirds of the league has committed to someone.
From 89 to 60 percent of their team snaps, there's quite a few examples of starters who simply dealt with injuries. Ben Roethlisberger, Marcus Mariota, Joe Flacco and Tyrod Taylor all fit in here. Sometimes off years in terms of health just happen in football, barring a select few, almost all NFL players struggle with injury troubles at some stage in their career. Most quarterbacks will land in this cohort because of a lot of factors, and it's not always a bad thing to miss some time, or sit out the end of the game. A lot of things happen throughout the season, including blowouts, unimportant games and minor injuries that knock players out for a game or two. While this position is less likely to get injured than others, the injury rates are still substantial.
In the 59 to 0 percent cohort, there isn't much to dissect, other than the major injuries to Andrew Luck and Tony Romo. There's a few teams that struggled the entire season with their quarterback situation, like Houston, San Francisco and Cleveland, but there's not much to evaluate there for 2016. Because of Brock Osweiler, Chip Kelly and Hugh Jackson, it's tough to take too much from those teams quarterback situations.
