Running Back (RB) Snap Counts

2016 Running back Snap Counts Week 17

Week 17 always gives us some weird numbers for snaps, and that was certainly the case this year. Zach Zenner, Shaun Draughn, Rex Burkhead, and Jacquizz Rodgers were some leaders in snap percentage. Injuries to Carlos Hyde, Jeremy Hill, Doug Martin, and Theo Riddick opened up the door to these plays. DeAngelo Williams served as the workhorse back for a resting Le'Veon Bell. Devonta Freeman, Jay Ajayi, and Mark Ingram didn't get full workloads this week, but Freeman and Ingram stacked the fantasy points regardless. Alex Collins saw 47% of the snaps, in a lackluster game against San Francisco for the Seattle running backs.

2016 Running Back Snap Counts Week 16

David Johnson and Le'Veon Bell are both top of the list again for percentage of team snaps. Todd Gurley ran extra snaps again with Benny Cunningham out, and DeMarco Murray played 85% of the team snaps. With Jeremy Hill and Lamar Miller out this past week, Alfred Blue played 70% of Houston's snaps, and Rex Burkhead played 78% of the team snaps for Cincinnati. Doug Martin was a surprising inactive this week, and we saw Jacquizz Rodgers pick up 61% of the team snaps. Charles Sims picked up the rest. Carlos Hyde played just 41% of the team snaps, and suffered a season ending injury.

2016 Running Back Snap Counts Week 15

David Johnson and Le'Veon Bell played 100% of the snaps this week, while Thomas Rawls was just behind at 93%. We saw Bilal Powell play 84% of the team snaps in a plus matchup against Miami. If Matt Forte is limited again, we should expect to see Powell keep playing above Forte. Kenneth Farrow played 75% of the team snaps filling in for the injured Melvin Gordon. Theo Riddick sat out again, and we saw Dwayne Washington play 71% of the snap. Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman pretty much split snaps, although Freeman had the monster day scoring three touchdowns.

2016 Running Back Snap Counts Week 14

With Benny Cunningham out, Todd Gurley played 89% of the snaps against Atlanta. This is his largest mark in some time. If Cunningham misses more time, this should continue. We saw two major injuries this week, as Matt Forte went down, and Melvin Gordon. Both were early on in the game, leaving Bilal Powell and Kenneth Farrow playing 80% of the snaps. Both backups would get tremendous snaps to finish out the year, which might be the case given their teams are out of the playoff race. Theo Riddick was out this week, which forced Dwayne Washington into a lead role. He played 61% of the snaps.

2016 Running Back Snap Counts Week 13

Once again, no surprises who was up top of the list for snaps this week. Le'Veon Bell, David Johnson, and Melvin Gordon were all playing nearly 90% of the team snaps. We also saw Jordan Howard key in on a great matchup against San Francisco. If you played Latavius Murray this week, 70% of the snaps went his way, and he also found the end zone twice. LeSean McCoy was a bit hindered in snaps, playing just 63%. Mike Gillislee played the rest. Jeremy Hill played just 58% of the snaps, and rushed for under two yards per carry. Safe to say he isn't taking advantage of any extra snaps.

2016 Running Back Snap Counts Week 12

No surprises up top, David Johnson, DeMarco Murray, Le'Veon Bell, and Ezekiel Elliot were the leaders in snap percentage. Jay Ajayi was also the other one over 80%. We saw Doug Martin return to his normal usage, in a surprising win over Seattle. While he didn't accumulate many fantasy points, he did look good. Devontae Booker had a small edge over Kapri Bibbs, so we assume he still holds the larger role. Jeremy Hill saw just 50% of the carries against Baltimore, but should be in line for more in better matchups. LeGarrette Blount also took a back seat to the two receiving backs.

2016 Running Back Snap Counts Week 11

DeMarco Murray, David Johnson, and Le'Veon Bell led the this week in snaps, playing above 60. Doug Martin was right at 60, which was a plus given his injury for the last few weeks. Ezekiel Elliot continues to be a workhorse, and saw 50 snaps this week, rushing on 25 of them. Jay Ajayi continues the solid workload, playing 80% of the team snaps this week in a tough matchup against Los Angeles. He will now face San Francisco at home. Rob Kelley and Tim Hightower were two backup running backs who got a chance to fill in. Kelley had a monster night against Green Bay.

2016 Running Back Snap Counts Week 10

When you have a running back that can be a WR1 on another team, you are going to see him play 100% of the snaps, or very close to it. That was the case with Le'Veon Bell, who touched the ball on 35% of his snaps. Melvin Gordon and David Johnson were also near that range. Se-attle has been fluctuating backs this season, mainly to injury, but CJ Prosise was their lead back this week, playing 77% of the snaps. While we believe this should be the case at least for next week, keep an eye on this situation. We shouldn't believe head coaches, as Darren Sproles was somewhat announced Philly's number one, yet him and Ryan Mathews played about 33% of the snaps each.

2016 Running Back Snap Counts Week 9

Have a week Melvin Gordon, who was tied with Le'Veon Bell for most snaps of Week 9. De-Marco Murray was right behind then. We saw a couple of injury replacements play big weeks, as DuJuan Harris played 88% of the snaps. Charcandrick West played 78% of the snaps. Carlos Hyde and Spencer Ware could be back this week, which would hinder those snaps. Darren Sproles has seemed to earn himself the top back role in Philly. He played 80% of the snaps. Tim Hightower played 43% of the snaps over Mark Ingram's 38%. Ingram had the big breakout run, but both were successful against a weak San Francisco defense.

2016 Running Back Snap Counts Week 8

Melvin Gordon and Ezekiel Elliot both had 65 snaps this week, as they continue to force them the ball. The more noticeable plays this week which caught our eye were Darren Sproles and Jordan Howard playing over 80% of the snaps. Sproles locked up a ton of snaps over Ryan Mathews, and Jordan Howard was back to his usual workhorse type self. Mark Ingram was benched early on this week, which led to Tim Hightower playing 62% of the snaps. Going for-ward the news is that Hightower earned himself more carries. Both will have a plus matchup heading into Week 9 against San Francisco.

2016 Running Back Snap Counts Week 7

On a per snap basis, Jeremy Hill was one of the most efficient we have seen. He scored 25 fantasy points, yet played just 21 snaps due to injury. Giovani Bernard played 33 snaps, and would be in for a bigger role because of Hill's injury. David Johnson and Le'Veon Bell led this week in snaps, but Johnson playing 87 was just a monster number, even in overtime. DeMarco Murray and Melvin Gordon continue to log heavy snaps, and that Gordon touchdown count is climbing higher and higher. He is up to three, and Dexter McCluster's arrival has yet to cut into Gordon's snap count. Frank Gore turned back the clock this week for a big one, playing 83% of the team snaps. Gore has been quietly productive in whatever amount of snap count he has had this season. Arian Foster announced his retirement, and this comes after the second straight week of Jay Ajayi rushes for over 200 yards. Ajayi played 64% of the snaps, and that should be the case again. Matt Jones had some fumbling issues for Washington this week, which led to Chris Thompson playing 59% of the snaps. Now it seems like Washington will stick with Jones for the time being, but keep a close eye on this situation. Jamaal Charles continues to take a backseat, as Spencer Ware saw 69% of the snaps.

2016 Running Back Snap Counts Week 6

The usual big name backs were up there in snap percentage this week. Le'Veon Bell, DeMarco Murray, and Ezekiel Elliot all played over 90% of the team snaps. Lamar Miller, Melvin Gordon, and CJ Anderson were in the 75%+ range. With Theo Riddick out this week, we saw Zach Zenner pick up 77% of the snaps in Detroit. Justin Forsett was signed by them, although we didn't see much of him. This might even out once he becomes a bit more acquainted with the team. The Dolphins-Steelers game did not go as planned, especially when it came to Jay Ajayi rushing for over 200 yards. He played 69% of the snaps, and rushed on 52% of them. We probably won't be banking on this type of performance too often. Cincinnati used Giovani Bernard quite a bit this week, which had a lot to do with the game-flow. James White is also being used a ton since Tom Brady's return. Given the passing attack is back in full force, I would expect this to continue. Spencer Ware continues to out-snap Jamaal Charles who is healthy, but it might be closing soon. Mark Ingram had a bit of a surprise snap count this week, playing 53% of the snaps in a game where the Saints where up quite a bit.

2016 Running Back Snap Counts Week 5

We are seeing some workhorses this year, and it seems to be more than any recent year I can remember. Le'Veon Bell as we know is always the high usage guy we can count on when healthy. He played 96% of the snaps this week, but he wasn't the only one. Jordan Howard played the same amount as well. Melvin Gordon was also in the 90% club, but had a costly fumble again. He might be a guy to start trending downwards if he keeps fumbling. Carlos Hyde, Todd Gurley, LeSean McCoy all played 80% of the snaps. Gurley and Hyde are the clear cut workhorses. After injuries and overall lack of solid play, McCoy has been a guy working heavy snaps, and also producing. No reason for that to not continue. There were a few odd names up over 50% this week — Giovani Bernard, Jay Ajayi, and James Starks. Bernard was a game flow thing, while Ajayi was simply just a coaching choice. Eddie Lacy had an ankle issue, but it isn't believed to be serious. Starks we always know is lurking for playing time. Oakland was without their lead back, Latavius Murray. DeAndre Washington led the way, playing 37 snaps.

2016 Running Back Snap Counts Week 4

If you were a Mark Ingram owner this week, you might want to skip this part. John Kuhn saw 25 snaps this week, which resulted in three touchdowns. I wouldn't expect this going forward, but we know Kuhn can be a vulture. Demarco Murray was already efficient this season, but took a monster leap in snap%. He was the top scorer this week. With Jeremy Langford out, Jordan Howard played 63 snaps, which was 91% of the Chicago backfield. This is encouraging for him filling in over the next few weeks. Melvin Gordon continues to lock in big snap counts with Danny Woodhead out. He played 89% of the team's snaps, and was even targeted in 12% of them through the passing game. But… Le'Veon Bell is back in action, and he did not miss a beat. He played 52 snaps, and even lined up at wide receiver. Christine Michael, Fizzy Whittaker, Matt Jones, and TJ Yeldon were a couple of other names that played over 55% of the team snaps. Keep an eye on them moving forward for a more consistent role. This week Matt Forte and Bilal Powell were nearly 50-50 in snaps this week. Forte had a huge workload the first two weeks, but things have now drifted towards a balanced workload.

2016 Running Back Snap Counts Week 3

You want to talk about workhorse, David Johnson played 70 snaps this weekend. We know DeAngelo Williams is a heavy snap guy right now, but Johnson will be that tremendous work rate back when Le'Veon Bell is back next week. Charles Sims also playing 76% of the snaps was encouraging for Tampa Bay. He isn't a terrific running back, but is certainly serviceable with that type of workload. He will continue to be an excellent replacement while Doug Martin is out. The first full week without Danny Woodhead is here, and Melvin Gordon played 87% of the snaps. Dexter McCluster played just 15 snaps this weekend, who is supposed to fill in the passing game. This is sure to increase. Jerrick McKinnon saw the 65-35 workload that every fantasy expert predicted with Matt Asiata. This is good news for McKinnon in plus matchups. Carolina just wasn't a good matchup in week 3. Jordan Howard was a big part of the offense for Chicago, and with Jeremy Langford's injury slash inefficiency, Howard might be in a bigger role for offense. Kenyan Drake also played more snaps than Jay Ajayi this weekend, but neither were tremendous weapons. Expect them to keep throwing with Arian Foster out.

2016 Running Back Snap Counts Week 2

Once again DeAngelo Williams dominated snaps for Pittsburgh this week, which led to another big outing. He has one week left before Le'Veon Bell comes back, so they should be feeding him the rock yet again. Matt Forte continues the trend of a heavy workload in New York, which wasn't really expected. Bilal Powell continues to take a seat on the sideline. There isn't much guessing, but I can't imagine this workload continues for Forte at his age. Lamar Miller, LeSean McCoy, and LeGarrette Blount were some other big workload backs from Week 2. This trend should certainly continue for them. Injuries were huge in week 2, and we will be seeing a lot of backups in play for week 3 and the foreseeable future. Doug Martin, Ameer Abdullah, Danny Woodhead, Adrian Peterson, Jonathan Stewart, and Rashad Jennings all left Week 2 with some type of injury — some worse than others. We saw Fozzy Whittaker play 57 snaps, but this was more because of their game-flow than anything else. Charles Sims, Theo Riddick, and Melvin Gordon can be relied upon when it comes to choosing backups. The rest isn't as safe as others, you'd be better off going elsewhere for your plays.

2016 Running Back Snap Counts Week 1

A few big notes to take away from week 1 with running backs — we saw Lamar Miller play 59 snaps, which bodes well for his 2016 success. This is going to be a notable difference from his time in Miami. There is certainly a reason to worry with the Tevin Coleman and Devonta Free-man battle. Coleman played 31 snaps, to Freeman's 35. Coleman was the more efficient back, and Atlanta has talked about riding the hit hand. Be sure to keep an eye on that situation. Theo Riddick might draw closer to Ameer Abdullah in week 2 for snaps, due to Riddick missing a quarter with concussion protocol. Both will be a big part in the passing game.

The running back position was on a downward spiral in 2015. There were dozens of injuries and very few players made it through the season alive. Only seven players played 60 percent or more of their team's snaps, and only 16 played more than 50 percent. In both fantasy points and games played, this was a low point for the running back position as a whole, and while it's likely that teams head more deeply towards committee backfields, there's reason to believe 2015 was an odd year for major injuries.

Now, some of the decline in touches is by design.. As mentioned teams are naturally headed towards a more committee approach in terms of splitting up third down carries/receptions with specialist backs and leaving the first and second downs to bigger, between the tackles runners. As the NFL gets safer and shifts towards dealing with injuries much more carefully, there isn't as much leeway for players to stay in games. Medical checks are essential any time a player gets nicked up now, and because of this, being forced to sit out even when things 'appear' minor is something that needs to be accounted for. This is one of the main reasons for this, and something fantasy football players need to be aware of.

Snaps are inherently an indicator of talent. The ability of a player to get and stay on the field is a great thing. Players who didn't 'play well' by efficiency standards like Latavius Murray and Frank Gore are once again in positions to start and get significant snaps. The largest cohort is between 20 and 50 percent. This is the natural habitat that most running backs fall into for the majority of their careers. Most teams employ twos backs are significant contributors, and this is represented here. As mentioned before, injuries were another big factor in this, but at the same time, those aren't going away.
