2016 Detroit Lions Outlook

Matthew Stafford has always been known as a volume based quarterback, and over the second half of last season, with new offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter at the helm, Stafford went from volume-only fantasy producer, to efficient volume producer. Over his last six games of the season, Stafford threw 17 of his 32 touchdown passes, completed over 65% of his passes in every game and only threw one interception. While that type of production can't expect to be reproduced, the life after Calvin narrative might not be as real as perceived. With a strong offensive coordinator calling the plays and Stafford taking care of the ball, he might finally be hitting a point where his arm talent can take over.

While the Lions expect to be run heavy once again in 2016, Ameer Abdullah should certainly improve on his 143 carries he received in year one. His 168 touches (25 receptions) should certainly bump up north of 200 this year, and even has the potential to get in the 225-250 range depending on how he and Theo Riddick split the backfield. Speaking of Riddick, he should once again be very involved on third down and out of the backfield. Riddick caught 80 passes in 2015, and should be in line for a similar season total this year.

As mentioned, with Calvin Johnson retiring, he leaves behind 150 targets unaccounted for. While some would like to redistribute those targets in a trickle down fashion to who's there now, they may simply pass a less in 2016. While that may be true, Golden Tate is in line for another season with above 120 targets, with a shot at 130-140. With that considered his range of outcomes, he's certainly a player that could end up with above 1100 receiving yards and 6 to 8 touchdowns.

Marvin Jones is a solid second wide receiver, and barring injury should see a target total above 100. In a similar vein to what Golden Tate's production looked like in 2015, the only difference being Jones usually plays deeper down the field, and should see a higher aDOT.

Eric Ebron is a potential breakout candidate. The former first round pick enters year three as the main receiving option down the seam, and shouldn't have much competition for targets. While his numbers weren't completely fantasy relevant last year, he improved immensely on his rookie year. His targets, receptions, catch percentage, yards per catch and touchdowns all went up from year one to two. The Lions invested a top ten pick in Ebron, and it's very reasonable to believe that they want to at least give him the chance at a feature role in the offense.
