2016 San Diego Chargers Outlook
Phillip Rivers and the Chargers should once against be an adventure in 2016. While they certainly had the passing volume in 2015, injuries to the skill positions and horrid offensive-line play really limited what they were able to do.
To start things off, Rivers should once again lead a pass happy offense. The Chargers were third in plays run in 2015, and second in passing attempts. While they should be improved this year, the Chargers simply aren't on the level of the Chiefs and Broncos, and will likely be playing from behind a lot again in 2016. With a healthy Keenan Allen back in the fold, and an explosive addition in Travis Benjamin, Rivers should land somewhere around 30 passing touchdowns. Rivers has thrown at least 26 passing touchdowns in each of the last eight seasons, and his completion percentage has been above 66 percent in each of the last three years.
The running game.. was.. a work in progress in 2015, to say the least. Highly touted first round pick Melvin Gordon suffered through rookie mistakes and bad O-line play, which crippled him by the end of the year before his eventual injury that truly ended his season. While his rookie season was a complete disaster, it's fair to assumed it does get SOMEWHAT better in 2016, and at the very least, he gets a chance at featured carries. Danny Woodhead should be a target hog in his exaggerated third down back role. While he struggled with a 3.4 yards per carry in 2015, his 106 targets in the pass game along with 80 receptions for 755 receiving yards led him to another top 12 fantasy RB finish. The Chargers had the worst per carry average in the NFL last year, and while it's not likely they become a top-end running team, it's fair to believe it gets better.
Keenan Allen was the definition of a target hog in the first eight games of the season. Allen received 89 targets and turned them into 67 receptions that went for 725 yards and four touchdowns. Allen was a top five wide receiver through those weeks, and then fell victim to an injury that ended his season. While the season numbers obviously don't compare to the players that played a full season, Allen's first half should be looked at for what it is, a true breakout third season. He is the target-hog in that offense, and should receive 140 plus targets if he remains healthy.
With Malcolm Floyd retiring, he hands off his deep threat role to Travis Benjamin, a fifth year receiver out of MIami. Benjamin has 4.3 forty time speed and should provide some decent high-upside weeks in good match-ups. Expect 80-100 targets and solid per-catch efficiency.
Antonio Gates career is winding down, and can't be relied upon in a week-to-week fashion anymore, but he still has reliable hands and provides upside for how cheap he is across all fantasy formats. Him and Stevie Johnson should battle it out for most of the slot/underneath targets left behind after Allen, Benjamin and Woodhead. While neither are all that appealing at this stag, they're both one injury away from being the pseudo-second option in one of the pass-heaviest teams in the NFL.
