2016 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Outlook

2015 was a transition year for the Buccaneers. They had plenty of injuries and didn't have a very successful season, but at the same time, their young players showed a lot of promise. The Buccaneers were 21st in plays run in 2015, ranking only 23rd in pass attempts. They were 8th in rushing attempts between Doug Martin and Charles Sims. They leaned on the running game most likely because it was Jameis Winston's rookie season as the starting quarterback.

Winston only completed 312 of his 535 pass attempts (58.3%), some his own fault, others being drops by his receivers. He threw for 22 touchdowns and 15 interceptions, which while mediocre for regular NFL quarterback standards, is pretty solid for a rookie quarterback. In terms of his receiving options, it starts with Mike Evans. Evans has been one of the most productive young wide receivers in NFL history, and while he dealt with drops in his second season, he received enough targets (148) to put together solid volume. While Evans did have 74 receptions and 1206 receiving yards, he only caught three touchdowns. This was a strange occurrence when you consider his rookie season and college production, but sometimes touchdowns are simply random.

Beyond Evans, things get a little murky, but Vincent Jackson should once again be second in line for significant targets. Jackson is entering his age 33 season, and while he did average about 8 targets a game when healthy in 2015, his career is on a downward trajectory. Beyond that, Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Cameron Brate capped off the rest of the players with any type of significance in the passing game. The tight ends combined for 69 targets. While Seferian-Jenkins was a second round pick they'd hope to develop, rumors of him struggling with work ethic make it hard to trust in terms of taking ahold of the feature tight end role.

Charles Sims and Doug Martin should once again form a very effective combination. They combined for 395 rushes, and should have a similar 66/33 split in 2015 (Martin had 288, Sims had 107). The receiving game is where Sims will have the majority of his impact. Sims had 70 targets to Martin's 44, and averaged 11.0 yards per reception on 51 receptions and scored four receiving touchdowns.
