2016 Washington Redskins Outlook

The Redskins made some changes this offseason, including letting go of Alfred Morris, signing Kirk Cousins to a longer term deal and drafting Josh Doctson in the first round. While these were relatively important changes, there's still some important things to pick apart here.

The Redskins were 24th in plays run in 2015. They were 21st in passing attempts and 14th in rushing attempts. Based on their off-season moves, you'd expect them to trend in a more pass heavy direction in 2016, however that may have them land middle of the pack if they only improve slightly on plays run.

Kirk Cousins ended his 2015 season absolutely on fire. From weeks 7-17, Cousins completed 67 percent of his passes in nine of his last ten starts. In that same span he threw 23 touchdowns and only three interceptions. While that's likely a second half stretch against beaten down and injured defenses, it's certainly a positive sign that he can pull off that kind of stretch. On the season Cousins threw for 29 touchdowns along with eleven interceptions. He completed 69.8 percent of his passes and had a 7.83 A/YA (Adjusted yards per attempt). With the Firepower he's been provided, he should have a similar, if not better 2016.

In terms of passing distribution, it was fairly bland beyond Jordan Reed. Reed and Garcon both had just above 110 targets (114 and 111) respectively, and nobody else was above 100. DeSean Jackson struggled through the season with injuries, and only managed 49 targets in ten games, which should take a big jump back up if he stays healthy for a majority of the season. Jamison Crowder had a really solid rookie season from the slot, catching 59 passes for 604 receiving yards. With everyone back and inserting Doctson, it might be tough for Crowder to increase on the total. Speaking of Doctson, he's a real wildcard, that will likely eat into Garcon's target total than anyone else, but at the same time, if he starts off the season well, he could be picking off targets from everyone's piece of the pie. Teams are normally willing to give first round picks significant roles if they show they're worthy. Overall, there should be plenty to go around, but at the same time, especially in DFS, the current week matchup is going to be essential to break down.

Alfred Morris is gone, and he's leaving 212 touches unaccounted for. Matt Jones was drafted by the Redskins in the third round last year out of Florida, and should seemingly take the lionshare of what Morris left behind. While he should be the lead back, it's tough to project a feature role for Jones with the way he performed last year. On his 144 carries he only averaged 3.4 yards per attempt and beyond one big play (which we don't want to fully take away from him), he was mediocre and not used much in the pass game. Chris Thompson is likely to be utilized in the pass game again. Thompson was third on the team in receptions (35) and had 240 receiving yards with two touchdowns in 2015.
