Question About Double Stacks in MLB

I'm trying to generate a bunch of lineups with double stacks in them in the optimizer and I'm not sure how to go about it. Basically I want to generate 20 lineups and I want each lineup to have two stacks in it (from four teams that I select). I tried setting up the stacks in the players tab. If I have 20 double-stacked lineups, then I should have 40 total player stacks (10 from each team), but if I set the quantity of stacks to 40 and try to generate 20 lineups, I get an error.

I went to the Stack Generator tool and was able to generate my 40 player stacks, but I can't see any way to have the optimizer combine those together with the pitchers that I want. I see there is an option to generate two team stacks, but I don't see anything that allows me to select the two teams I want to stack together if I do that. Also, for some reason it looks like the maximum amount of players I can set the double stack to is only 7 for DK, even though I should be able to stack 8 (4 from one team, 4 from another or 3 and 5).

Any tips on how to accomplish this? Thanks!

Question

@pennypacker - Can you please add some specifics so we can look at what you're trying to do?

If I have 20 double-stacked lineups, then I should have 40 total player stacks (10 from each team), but if I set the quantity of stacks to 40 and try to generate 20 lineups, I get an error.

You can't create double stacked (two team stacks in same lineup) lineups in Lineup Optimizer. You will need to create the double stacks in the Stack Generator and generate the lineups in the Lineup Optimizer. The number of stacks in the Lineup Optimizer are the number of lineups you want stacks in. Naturally, the number of stacks can't be greater than the number of lineups. Number of lineups generated will always need to be greater than or equal to number of stacks. I think now that you know how stacks work in lineup optimizer, this should make sense.

So, let's look at the stack generator and create your double stacks first. What two sets of two teams do you want stacks of? If I understand correctly, you want 20 lineups with double stacks from 2 unique teams and a second set of 20 lineups with double stacks from 2 unique teams. The way to accomplish this would be to generate a double stack and lock a player from each of the teams you want in the double stack.

What slate are you trying to do this in?

What pitchers are you trying to pair with your double stacks? The slate may be too small and/or the salary combinations may not be possible with the pitcher salaries. We'll need to run the example to determine what's going awry.

We're about to lose today's slates, so please send this info in am tomorrow so we can run the examples.

Okay that makes sense. I was hoping I could just plug in the teams I wanted (without picking specific players), set pitcher exposures, and have the optimizer piece players together from the teams I wanted in whatever configurations it can come up with within a certain salary range (like $48,500-$50,000). But I could have it generate all my double stacks individually like you suggested and then build the lineups around those. I'll give that a shot tomorrow and let you know how it works.

Any idea why the maximum number of players I can have in the double stack is 7 and not 8? Actually it looks like I can have an 8 player double stack on Fanduel, but when I set the optimizer to DK the maximum number of players drops down to 7 for some reason.

@pennypacker - that DraftKings dropdown is incorrect. We're updating that to 8 players today. Thanks for pointing that out. We're building out a minimum and maximum option for building lineups as well. That will be live this week. Let me know how it goes. Thanks!

How did it go?

It's a little more time consuming than I had hoped, since I have to generate each unique double stack separately, but I do think it is going to work out. Thanks for your help. The minimum/maximum option will be a nice addition as well. I'll look for that later in the week!

@pennypacker - yeah, a little more time consuming, but you do get more control by selecting players in the double stack you want and compare double stack options to select your favorites.

What is the ideal setup for you?

Would you prefer to lock in a pitcher or two and then tell the optimizer you want a two team stack with those pitchers? Do you want the Optimizer to pick the two team stacks for you or would you like to select one or two of the teams in the double stack.
