2016 WR Targets Week 17

With New Orleans trailing for the entire game, Drew Brees went to his rookie wideout quite a bit. Michael Thomas finished the week with 14 targets. Julian Edelman, Rishard Matthews, Jarvis Landry, and T.Y. Hilton were some notable names up top. We also had some Week 17 strag-glers, like Adam Humphries, Bryan Walters, Demarcus Ayers, and Breshad Perriman have higher than eight targets. Julio Jones was back this week, and had himself a nice rebound game finding the end zone. He finished with nine targets on the day, and even got himself a rare red zone touchdown. JJ Nelson saw 12 targets, which had a lot to do with David Johnson leaving the game.

2016 WR Targets Week 16

Odell Beckham Jr saw 20 targets this week, and is simply the only option in this Giants offense. Take him away and this is a bottom five offense. Seattle was in comeback mode this week, which put Doug Baldwin in a spot where he saw 19 targets, and delivered. The big scorer of the week went to Adam Thielen who saw 15 targets. Cody Core, Victor Cruz, Dontrelle Inman, and Jermaine Kearse were a few odd names to see double-digit targets this week. Julio Jones saw limited snaps this week due to injury, and saw seven targets. Amari Cooper was expected to get more involved, but had another disappointing week, and saw six targets.

2016 WR Targets Week 15

DeAndre Hopkins had 17 targets this past week as Brock Oswieler was benched after the half, and in came Tom Savage. It was a game plan to just filter targets to Hopkins. Cameron Mere-dith, Golden Tate, and Julien Edelman were a couple of high volume receivers yet again this week. In the first game without Michael Floyd, JJ Nelson saw 11 targets. Michael Crabtree saw five more targets than Amari Cooper at eight. He drew the better individual matchup, so this isn't really a surprise. Alshon Jeffery saw nine targets in his first game back from suspension. This was second to Deonte Thompson on the team.

2016 WR Targets Week 14

In a game where they didn't have much of a run game, Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders combined for 30 targets, and lost the game. Both had exceptional usage with Trevor Seimien under center. Kenny Britt, Robby Anderson, and T.Y. Hilton were a few others up there. Los Angeles was down from the start forcing Jared Goff to throw. Jordan Matthews returned this week to his usual workload, he saw ten targets. With the Chicago injuries, Cameron Meredith saw eight targets, which was one more than the next, Josh Bellamy. Phillip Dorsett saw an odd amount of targets this week (8), yet I wouldn't bank on that continuing.

2016 WR Targets Week 13

It was sort of an odd week when you looked at the top of the wideouts list for targets. Malcolm Mitchell, Dorial Green-Beckham, Jermaine Kearse, and Marqise Lee all had more targets than Antonio Brown and Mike Evans. Mitchell has certainly earned himself a role in this New England system. Green-Beckham benefitted from Jordan Matthews being out, but his role has been growing in the offense regardless. The same goes for Lee's. Kearse is probably the only real flukey one, as the Seattle revolving doors rotate on a weekly basis. Evans and Brown had down target weeks, and so did Dez Bryant, but he made up for his with a touchdown.

2016 WR Targets Week 12

Tyrell Williams drew a tough matchup this week against Houston's secondary, yet was targeted more than any other wideout. He had 14 targets, posting an 8-57-1 line. Michael Crabtree and Terrelle Pryor were second in line. A one game sample size showed that Marquess Wilson was the best target for Matt Barkley. He saw 11 targets this week, posting a monster 8-125-1 line. Some names with bigger targets were Ted Ginn, Kenny Britt, Adam Thielen, Deonte Thompson, Josh Bellamy, and Malcolm Mitchell. Most of them saw bigger roles due to injuries. Julio Jones just saw seven targets, likely due to Patrick Peterson shadowing him.

2016 WR Targets Week 11

With no Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman saw 17 targets. He caught eight for 77 yards and a score. Malcolm Mitchell was next in line for New England with five. Rishard Matthews and Mike Evans both had 13 targets, then we got into two rookies. Corey Coleman and Sterling Shepard had 11 and 12 targets. After a few down weeks in targets, T.Y. Hilton came alive with nine targets, and had a successful day. Dorial Green-Beckham had eight targets this week, which was second to Jordan Matthews (10). Doug Baldwin had just five targets in that game, but did throw a touchdown pass to Russell Wilson.

2016 WR Targets Week 10

We had some monster target shares this week, as three wideouts tied for 18. Antonio Brown, Jordy Nelson, and Larry Fitzgerald all had that mark, catching 12 or more. Julio Jones, Stefon Diggs, and Allen Robinson were up there as well. Kenny Britt and Tyreek Hill saw double-digit targets, and Hill's came with the injury to Jeremy Maclin. It wasn't much of Albert Wilson or Chris Conley. Brandon Marshall saw just six targets this week, and the same goes for Jarvis Landry. The heightened running game has really brought down target numbers for Landry. He is still a decent threat for 6-8 a game.

2016 WR Targets Week 9

If you missed the Thursday Night Football game, Mike Evans had 17 targets. He took two to the house on 11 receptions. Stefon Diggs and Jordy Nelson were next in line. Golden Tate had a big week, posting 11-79-1 line on 12 targets. Rishard Matthews and Eli Rogers were two wideouts with double digit targets this week, and those two names we usually don't expect up here. Matthews is the more likely to have repeat numbers, but even that's a stretch. Michael Thomas has been a lock for Drew Brees and the Saints, and he saw eight targets against San Fran.

2016 WR Targets Week 8

A.J. Green saw a week high, 18 targets against Washington in an overtime game in London. Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper both were high volume threats in overtime. Allen Robinson saw 15 targets, and caught six for 40 yards. Robinson's volume hasn't been an issue this season, it has been the consistency of Blake Bortles. It's been an ugly year for A-Rob. Stefon Diggs had 13 targets this week, which is a plus heading into a matchup against the Lions. Brandin Cooks, T.Y. Hilton, and Julio Jones were some of the bigger name receivers to see less than seven targets in Week 8. This was certainly a down week for all three, and you can even toss in DeAndre Hopkins had a dream matchup, but saw just seven targets.

2016 WR Targets Week 7

Davante Adams and Randall Cobb led Week 7 in targets, which meant Jordy Nelson took a back seat in the passing game. They were by far the most productive when it came to the passing game this week in Green Bay. Ty Montgomery also had 13 targets. Julio Jones had a monster week, grabbing 174 receiving yards on 15 targets. Tavon Austin also had 15 targets out there in London. TY Hilton had yet another week of double-digit targets, which bodes well for his fantasy relevance. In terms of volume there hasn't been many that can compare to consistency of Hilton. Golden Tate, Michael Crabtree, and Michael Wallace were some other names over double-digit targets. It was yet another down game for Allen Robinson, who saw eight targets, but caught only two of them. He is nothing more than a GPP play at this point, and maybe a guy we keep fading until we see something. Marvin Jones had just five targets this week, and so did Amari Cooper. The Oakland wideout was having a solid stretch of looks, which came to a screeching halt. Pierre Garcon, Jeremy Maclin, and Stefon Diggs were a couple of value wideouts this week, yet none amounted to much production.

2016 WR Targets Week 6

Brian Hoyer has been looking Cameron Meredith's way over the last few weeks. He had 15 targets this week, who has had a bigger role for Kevin White. While we were waiting to see some consistency, we might want to jump onboard rather quickly. Alshon Jeffery had 13 targets, after a lot of talk about not necessarily forcing him the ball. In a game where there were plenty of points, Kelvin Benjamin was enjoying garbage time in New Orleans. He had 14 targets. We also saw Brandin Cooks on the other side have nine. These two were the highest among wideouts in this game. Terrelle Pryor and Amari Cooper also had 13, and were uber-efficient. Green Bay had a very inefficient week at home against Dallas. DaVante Adams had a late injury, but I am not sure if that was the reason why Ty Montgomery saw 12 targets. Golden Tate, Mohamed Sanu, Allen Hurns, and Kendall Wright all had 9-12 targets — as I figured I would throw some odd names out there for were big factors in the offense. Guys who had down targets this week were Allen Robinson, Marvin Jones, and Doug Baldwin. Jones and Robinson had plus matchups, so it had a lot to do with other wide receivers getting looks over them this week.

2016 WR Targets Week 5

Brandon Marshall led the week with 15 targets, which was sort of expected. No Eric Decker and a matchup against Pittsburgh created double digit targets yet again. Next line was Jeremy Kerley this week, with 13, Jorday Nelson also had the same number. Oddly enough, Kerley was the more efficient wideout. Amari Cooper had a monster week, and it would have been bigger if he could figure out how to stay inbounds. A few guys took advantage of injuries, like Cameron Merideth. Kevin White being out, he saw 12 targets this week. Eddie Royal also saw nine. Once again, Alshon Jeffery was the non-factor again, and you might be getting worried. The San Diego Chargers had Travis Benjamin leading the team in targets (11). Tyrell Williams finished with six. Dontrelle Inman only had three. When Miami's two best wideouts have a combined five targets. Now Ryan Tannehill didn't have much time to throw, but Landry and Parker were ghosts out there. Phillip Dorsett saw over 90% of the snaps, but saw just three targets. He will continue to be a boom-or-bust threat moving forward. For those keeping track of Dorial Green-Beckham, this is his third straight game with four targets.

2016 WR Targets Week 4

Holy Julio Jones! 300 yards and a score on 15 targets, as he finally broke out in 2016. However, Jones wasn't the leader in targets this week, it was John Brown for Arizona. He was heavily used with 16, and caught ten of them. He had the easier matchup of the wideouts, so this makes some sense, but I wouldn't bank on consistent targets for any Cardinals wideout, outside of Larry Fitzgerald. Emmanuel Sanders, Michael Crabtree, and AJ Green were some other heavy target receivers this week, who all had solid games yet again. The situation in San Diego continues to be all over the place, as Dontrelle Inman was the guy this week, with 11 targets. That was seventh in the rankings. Robert Woods had double digit targets with Sammy Watkins out. He is going to need to step up in his absence. With Dez Bryant out for the first week, Brice Butler saw the most targets in Dallas, with nine. Terrence Williams had six, and Cole Beasley had four. Before leaving with an injury, Kevin White had nine targets. It is pretty obvious that Brian Hoyer is looking his way more often than not. This is over 20 targets in the last two games, and White missed the fourth. With Eric Decker out, Quincy Enunwa had seven targets against a tough matchup. He should be around there or higher going forward.

2016 WR Targets Week 3

First thing under Brian Hoyer that I saw was he targeted Kevin White 14 times. I doubt this continues, but we might see things even out between him and Alshon Jeffery, who saw just seven targets. Jeffery was been blanketed the last few weeks, as expected. Mike Evans had another monster week. Can you guess who was behind him on Tampa? Adam Humphries had 12 targets. A bit odd, but when Tampa is throwing this many times, you can expect that. The San Diego situation had Tyrell Williams leading the way, who is more of a possession wide receiver than Travis Benjamin. Williams had nine targets to Benjamin's seven. John Brown finally got involved for the Cardinals this season, after dealing with some concussion issues, and well just being the third option. Brown had 11 targets, which was second to Larry Fitzgerald on the team. A few very low numbers from Week 3 go to Phillip Dorsett with just four targets, which was a bit odd with Donte Moncrief out. Jordan Matthews and Randall Cobb both had three targets, and then probably the biggest surprise was Kelvin Benjamin. He had just one target. Benjamin came in as the target leader in Carolina, and their clear number one. This is likely just a fluke.

2016 WR Targets Week 2

Mike Evans had 18 targets in Week 2, yes 18. He only caught six of them though, but managed to get 70 yards and a touchdown. He had a tough matchup with Patrick Peterson, so this is understandable. But, if Evans keeps getting mass targets, which he should, he will continue to thrive. With a matchup against Cleveland in Week 3 — DeVante Parker and Jarvis Landry having 13 targets a piece is great potential for stacking. Both finished with over 100 yards. It took a week, but Dak Prescott finally found out he has Dez Bryant on his team. He doubled targets from Week 1, finishing with 12. Even in a tough matchup, T.Y. Hilton leads the league in targets, and had 11 in Week 2. There were certainly disappointing target numbers for wideouts in Week 2. AJ Green had eight targets against a Pittsburgh secondary that has some question marks. However, Green is the only elite threat they have, and should be force fed moving forward. Alshon Jeffery was another one, finishing the week with just seven targets. This might have to do with the lack of options around him, allowing teams to blanket him. Keep an eye on that moving forward.

2016 WR Targets Week 1

Allen Robinson is your week 1 target leader, and if he gets peppered with targets like this, it will be another epic year from him. Although he caught just six of them, expect better efficiency going forward. Carson Wentz begun his NFL career, and actually did quite well. Jordan Matthews was his go-to target, throwing to him 14 times. There was a lot of Tajae Sharpe talk before week 1, and he received 11 targets from his second-year quarterback. He saw WR1 targets, and might continue to be that go-to guy. Dez Bryant's five target game had to be the most disappointing in terms of wide receivers. It was a lot of check down passes to Cole Beasley and Jason Witten.

2015 WR Target Notes

Receiving targets are an excellent way to measure a player's usage on a team, and make comparisons to other receivers. Generally higher target numbers mean more production, and at a much more consistent rate. Receivers over 170 targets sit an elite territory, while sitting over 130 was an above average rate as well. With that being said, we saw Julio Jones crack 200 targets last season, creeping into the top five most targets in an NFL season. Jones finished with a 136-1871-8 line last season. DeAndre Hopkins, Brandon Marshall, Antonio Brown, and Demaryius Thomas all finished above 100 targets las year. All though one player in that group did not quite meet the production expectations for a player with such a high target rate.

It is not always the wide receivers fault for a poor catch percentage. As mentioned above with Demaryius Thomas, he had a down year compared to the past and for what you expect a receiver to put up with 177 targets. His 59% catch rate was a bit to do with an injured/old Peyton Manning, and an inexperienced Brock Osweiler. You want the efficiency that comes with a high amount of targets. Catch rate is also something to consider when a player doesn't have a high amount of targets. Let's take a look at Danny Amendola, who is just a secondary piece of the New England Patriots offense. He had 65 receptions last season on just 87 targets. That is a 75% catch rate, which is something to consider when diving down for value.

On a weekly basis, the average targets per game is a good indicator of how often your receivers will be targeted. Have Julio Jones on your team, well last year he averaged 12.7 targets per game. When you factor in his 1.17 fantasy points per target last season. You could bank on about an average of 14.8 points without the touchdown bonus. Demaryius Thomas suffered from a lack of offense, with his 0.92 fantasy points per target. This is another number that contributed in the subpar 2015 season. Jarvis Landry is another interesting fantasy player, and more so in PPR scoring. You might lean one way or another on him actually being an above average receiver, but his volume makes him a better fantasy player. He averaged 10.4 targets per game last season, and ranked fifth in the league in receptions per game (6.88). Now with only four receiving touchdowns, the receptions/targets are his biggest source of points.

It is all about the volume for wide receivers, and targets will give you that measurement to breakdown. Fantasy production comes tied with volume, and even more so for receivers. It was not a fluke that three of the top five targets leaders had double-digit touchdowns. If it wasn't for Atlanta's red zone play-calling, Jones would have been a fourth. Whether an injury has taken place, or you are simply searching targets. This will give you all you need to know about player volume.
