Being able to predict player owned percentage in daily fantasy sports can provide a serious advantage when building GPP lineups. It's a challenging task and we've decided to build a tool to test the viability. The first step in tool creation is brainstorming ideas on how to solve the issue at hand. Having our new, sparkly forums gives us our first opportunity to involve the community. DraftKings offers a good amount of downloadable post contest information such as players selected, so we'll start with trying to predict DraftKings ownership percentage.

I'll start it off with some ideas:

1. Track ownership percentages on FanDuel on Thursday games and download post DraftKings contest information and determine if there is a predictive correlation.

2. Track a number of the larger DFS sites for weekly picks and download post DraftKings contest information and determine if there is a predictive correlation.

3. Track twitter mentions in DFS and fantasy football accounts and download post DraftKings contest information and determine if there is a predictive correlation.

Any and all ideas are welcome.

Using past data of players at certain positions and price points could be useful also, but that's getting quite a bit more advanced.

I agree using certain positions and price points could be useful.

Hey what about taking into account players coming off of bad weeks I have noticed based on a small sample size that they are usually under owned the next week

@sports_25tolife - got it. We'll need to start storing older position and salary data.

@tlp407 - I think this definitely impacts % owned. This should be factored into the picks and twitter chatter. IE - olsen has a bad week, next week, fewer experts will be on him and less chatter about him as an option. However, this could be an incorrect assumption. We would need a baseline to compare and deduce what a "bad week" is. Maybe the player doesn't hit his projection or Cafe Value.

I think a viable strategy with this is a 100% fade of guys who are filling in or stepping into a bigger role due to injury. Talking strictly GPP here of course, but players flock to these players/situations in a big way. It's somewhat different from your original idea of predicting ownership, but much like Davante Adams in Week 1, we saw quite a bit of Terrance Williams/Donte Moncreif ownership in Week 2.
