Cash Game Locks: MLB Daily Fantasy Baseball
Cash games typically reward high floor rosters. You don't need to score 60 points on FanDuel or 160 on DraftKings to win money. Instead, you should aim for a nice base of around 40 and 120 points, respectively. Our MLB Cash Game Picks will highlight the top pick and a value pick at each position for both platforms.
PITCHER
Felix Hernandez | |||||||
FanDuel Salary | DraftKings Salary | Versus | FIP | K/9 | GB% | Vegas Total | Money Line |
$11,500 | $11,300 | Twins | 2.56 | 9.6 | 54% | 6.5 | -200 |
This should not come as any surprise and ultimately you should not go any further in your cash games than Felix Hernandez. The guy is locked in, an elite pitcher, against a team that cannot hit the broad side of the barn right now. An elite FIP, K/9 and GB%, paired with the lowest Vegas total and highest favorite. Don't make the mistake of not playing Hernandez, it could cost you all your cash games tonight.
Gerrit Cole | |||||||
FanDuel Salary | DraftKings Salary | Versus | FIP | K/9 | GB% | Vegas Total | Money Line |
$8,700 | $8,200 | Diamondbacks | 3.20 | 8.6 | 48% | 8 | -125 |
This is my second option tonight and will be most likely used as my SP2 or GPP option. Gerrit Cole has displayed dazzling pitches this year, as well as the ability to keep the ball of the ground. Arizona is far from a great hitting team, and the emergence of a young superstar at a discounted price makes for a superb SP2 on DraftKings.
CATCHER
Buster Posey | |||||||
FanDuel Salary | DraftKings Salary | Opp. Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs RHP | ISO vs RHP 2012-2015 | wRC+ vs RHP | Batting Order | Vegas Run Total |
$4,400 | Butler (R) | .357 | .154 | 133 | 4 | 10 |
Catcher is a position night in and night out that I can't stand. Typically paying up in GPPs can be contrarian and paying up in cash games can be a waste of your money. If you decide tonight to pay up, Buster Posey makes for a solid floor in the best hitting environment in baseball. While he isn't putting dazzling stats on the board, note that half of his hitting statistics come in a pitcher's park. Expect a rise in numbers while playing in Coors against a young pitcher.
My strategy for catcher tonight is to punt with top of the order or power. By following lineup cards as they are released, you will be able to find supreme value at the catcher position on a large slate.
FIRST BASE
Jose Abreu | |||||||
FanDuel Salary | DraftKings Salary | Opp. Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs LHP | ISO vs LHP 2012-2015 | wRC+ vs LHP | Batting Order | Vegas Run Total |
$4,400 | $5,400 | Duffy (L) | .459 | .317 | 198 | 3 | 7.5 |
To say I absolutely love Jose Abreu tonight would be a gross understatement. He boasts a .459 wOBA, .317 ISO and an astounding 34% HR/FB rate. Yes, you read that correct, he hits a third of his balls for home runs against left handed pitching. Did I mention Danny Duffy has a 45% FB rate and an xFIP of 4.43? My dong call of the night and top overall play of the night my friends, Jose Abreu.
Justin Morneau | |||||||
FanDuel Salary | DraftKings Salary | Opp. Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs RHP | ISO vs RHP 2012-2015 | wRC+ vs RHP | Batting Order | Vegas Run Total |
$3,900 | $4,700 | Heston (R) | .374 | .204 | 133 | 4 | 10 |
So, you've decided to look at someone other than Abreu at first base? I can't blame you as his price point is very expensive, however, you will need someone that displays a similar upside to Abreu. While Morneau boasts a not-too-shabby .204 ISO versus right-handed pitching, I am more interested in his game environment at Coors. The highest game total of the night provides for RBI, run and extra base hits opportunitites at a discount on all sites.
SECOND BASE
Devon Travis | |||||||
FanDuel Salary | DraftKings Salary | Opp. Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs LHP | ISO vs LHP 2012-2015 | wRC+ vs LHP | Batting Order | Vegas Run Total |
$3,100 | $3,100 | Smly (L) | .774 | 1 | 406 | 2 | 8 |
Disclaimer – his stats aren't showing any sort of relevance as the sample size is eight plate appearances, so allow me to tell you, I have watched this youngster in the top of the order display power and speed. He makes for a fantastic cheap play as he displays the ability to go yard, steal a base and score runs. He is my favorite second baseman of the night for those reasons. Did I mention he is on one of the most explosive offenses in MLB? Yeah, unload Travis without caution.
Robinson Cano | |||||||
FanDuel Salary | DraftKings Salary | Opp. Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs RHP | ISO vs RHP 2012-2015 | wRC+ vsRHP | Batting Order | Vegas Run Total |
$4,100 | $4,600 | Hughes (R) | .417 | .243 | 168 | 3 | 6.5 |
Robinson Cano. Versus a righty. End of Story. Cano has displayed throughout his career that he absolutely crushes righties to the tune of a .417 wOBA and .243 ISO. While Phil Hughes isn't exactly the type of pitcher I will pick on, he is the type of pitcher who either has it or doesn't on any given night. He is very inconsistent and the patience of Cano gives him a high floor versus Hughes. This play is more of batter play than a pitcher play, as Cano can be considered matchup proof versus righties.
THIRD BASE
Josh Donaldson | |||||||
FanDuel Salary | DraftKings Salary | Opp. Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs LHP | ISO vs LHP 2012-2015 | wRC+ vs LHP | Batting Order | Vegas Run Total |
$4,300 | $4,200 | Smyly (L) | .412 | .294 | 169 | 3 | 8 |
I have listed one third baseman here for a very specific reason. He has a fantastic price and absolutely crushes left-handed pitching. While Drew Smyly will likely be a good pitcher in the future, heck he has displayed serious talent already, he has to face lefty masher Donaldson tonight. To go along with Donaldson's .412 wOBA and .294 ISO he also boasts a 44% FB Rate and a 20% HR/FB rate versus left-handed pitching. His incredible stats and the fact he has been absolutely locked in lately makes him the second best option of the night in cash games behind Abreu.
SHORTSTOP
Troy Tulowitzki | |||||||
FanDuel Salary | DraftKings Salary | Opp. Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs RHP | ISO vs RHP 2012-2015 | wRC+ vs RHP | Batting Order | Vegas Run Total |
$5,100 | $5,200 | Heston (R) | .401 | .222 | 141 | 2 | 10 |
The man that needs very little introduction – Troy “Tulo" Tulowitzki. He is always a much better play when facing off against lefties, however, he is always in play more for me given the scarcity of the shortstop position and his immense upside. While he isn't as great versus right-handed pitching, he still boasts a .400 wOBA and .222 ISO all while playing in Coors field. If you have the money to spend up, do not hesitate. He is an elite play night in and night out.
Jose Reyes | |||||||
FanDuel Salary | DraftKings Salary | Opp. Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs LHP | ISO vs LHP 2012-2015 | wRC+ vs LHP | Batting Order | Vegas Run Total |
$3,600 | $4,000 | Smyly (L) | .318 | .123 | 98 | 1 | 8 |
Jose Reyes has struggled this year due to injury, which is reflected in his price tag. Reyes is always in a good spot in that explosive offense given his ability to get on base and his base running ability. When I am not targeting power, I am targeting speed. If Reyes gets on, he is coming around for a run scored. Enjoy the low price on Reyes because it will not last for long.
OUTFIELD
Corey Dickerson | |||||||
FanDuel Salary | DraftKings Salary | Opp. Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs RHP | ISO vs RHP 2012-2015 | wRC+ vs RHP | Batting Order | Vegas Run Total |
$4,900 | $5,300 | Heston (R) | .401 | .262 | 142 | 6 | 10 |
Corey Dickerson needs little introduction, as you all know, I love Dickerson whenever he faces a righty. I touted him yesterday and he went yard, and I am touting him today as he is being set up for a monster game. A career .400 wOBA and .262 ISO place him as an elite plays already without the added bonus of playing in Coors. Although Heston has shown signs of promise, he is pitching where pitchers go to have home runs hit off them. I love Dickerson against the young'n.
Charlie Blackmon | |||||||
FanDuel Salary | DraftKings Salary | Opp. Pitcher & Handedness | wOBA vs RHP | ISO vs RHP 2012-2015 | wRC+ vs RHP | Batting Order | Vegas Run Total |
$4,300 | $4,800 | Heston (R) | .347 | .153 | 105 | 1 | 10 |
You should be identifying a trend here. I am targeting Colorado left-handed bats versus a young pitcher at Coors Field. One thing I have noticed this year is Coors bats have gone grossly under owned in all game types due to pricing changes. This makes these even more important in all game types due to the inflated scoring done in Coors. This is a very simple play of targeting the leadoff hitter in the best game environment. He provides power, speed and a surprisingly high floor given the matchup.
