Pitching Pulse: Salary Exploitation & Ownership: 5-23-15

Each day during MLB season will bring us some major price differences among starting pitchers on all sites. These price discrepancies and the site's roster differences can alter the way we use pitchers on each site. Listed below are four of today's top pitchers, each with their salary listed as well as a ratio that takes into account both the total salary cap on the site and the number of roster positions that need filling. We've also provided some betting info for you reference. The higher the ratio, the more you'll be able to spend elsewhere.

Jake Arrieta

It seems like a theme for my articles lately, but the pitching slate tonight is less than desirable at best. For cash games on all sites, there is no reason to fade Arrieta. I could be talked into Bolsinger on Fanduel instead to allow higher priced bats, but even that is a stretch for me. Chase Field is Arizona will never be confused as a pitchers park, but the Diamondbacks lineup will never be confused with the 'Murderers Row" either. They are ranked in the bottom third of the MLB in K rate against right handed pitching (19.5%,) and couple that with Arrieta's 27.1% K rate, he could be in for a big game. With the lack of trustworthy options, plug in Arrieta and move on.

Mike Bolsinger

Bolsinger is off to a great start this year, and the Dodgers are a heavy favorite at home against the Padres. He's got a decent K rate (20%,) and keeps the ball on the ground almost 60% of the time. That coupled with the fact Padres do not hit righties well, with a .298 wOBA, makes me feel safe to roster him in all formats. His price on Fanduel is really nice, and don't mind him as a cash game alternative to Arrieta if you want to roster some high priced Coors or Fenway batters.

Ian Kennedy

I will keep this write up very short and not so sweet, I hate even typing 'Ian Kennedy" right now. His xFIP of 4.20 makes you think his ERA could come down a bit, but this same Dodgers lineup tee'd off on him in their only match up this year, and the more recent results haven't been good for Kennedy either. I'm of the opinion that all is not lost for Kennedy, and he's still striking out batters at a good clip (20.3%.) I will stress that this is strictly a GPP play.

Edison Volquez

Volquez doesn't have the greatest match up, but Vegas has the Royals as a small favorite at home against the Cardinals. His K rate is up this year to 19%, and if he can keep his walks down, I like his chances of pitching deep into the game. The Cardinals are middle of the pack against right handed pitching, with a wOBA of .317. On Draftkings and Fantasy Feud I really like him as a secondary option to Arrieta.
